podcast-writing

There are times when I struggle with writing. I fill the gap with reading, research, and listening to podcasts. I discovered podcasts after coming down with a cold that lasted for over a month. In my desperation to find something I stumbled on a podcast and that led to more. So here is a list of podcasts about writing, publishing, and selling books.

  1. The Self-Publishing Podcast
  2. The Creative Penn
  3. The Sell More Books Show
  4. Helping Writers Become Authors
  5. The Smarter Artist
  6. Authority Self-Publishing
  7. Self-Publishing Formula Podcast
  8. Story Grid Podcast
  9. Writing Excuses
  10. Tea and Jeopardy

1. The Self-Publishing Podcast

The podcast is hosted by three writers Dave W. Wright, Sean Platt, and Johnny B. Truant. The different personalities and writing styles makes this a fantastic podcast to listen to. Dave is an introvert, Sean is an Extrovert, and Johnny is the voice of reason. They all approach writing in a different way, with a range of experiences in one show. One of the most amazing things to listen to is Johnny’s journey. From having just one book published when the show began to being a full time writer. This podcast is a casual conversation between three friends and uses course language. At times the show gets side tracked with hilarious consequences.

2. The Creative Penn

One of the best, and finest writing podcasts no matter what stage you are at. Joanna Penn is the author of fiction books in the thriller genre. She has some fantastic non-fiction books on writing and becoming an authorpreneur. Joanna starts each show with summary of her writing week. She has a broad range of guests from the writing community. The wealth of knowledge she shares with her audience is invaluable.

3. The Sell More Books Show

Jim Kukhral and Bryan Cohen keep up with the latest. The show discusses recent news in the publishing industry. Jim and Bryan do a fantastic job finding interesting bits of information. They add their own unique perspective.

4. Helping Writers Become Authors

K. M. Weiland breaks down structure and plot focusing on a topic with each episode. It is an astounding and brilliant look at the inner workings of writing.

5. The Smarter Artist

Dave W. Wright, Sean Platt, Johnny B. Truant and the team answer writing questions. It is short and spot on for great advice. If you ever had a question about the writing process you will find it here.

6. Authority Self-Publishing

Steve Scott, Barrie Davenport, and Ron Clendenin make up the hosts for this podcast. This is a frank and wonderful discussion between friends. With lots of amazing suggestions for writers who are thinking about self-publishing.

7. Self-Publishing Formula Podcast

The podcast is hosted by Mark Dawson and James Batch. If you ever wanted to go behind the scenes of self-publishing this follows the journey of an author. This looks at the tasks behind the role. With all the hard work that goes into running a business as an independent author.

8. Story Grid Podcast

Shawn Coyne and Tim Grahl take a close look at story dynamics. They include the similar threads that run through each genre. They discuss tropes and the universal points of structure that makes a story work.

9. Writing Excuses

Brandon Sanderson, Mary Robinette Kowal, Howard Taylor, and Daniel Wells host the podcast. They discuss the fundamental issues they face with writing.

10. Tea and Jeopardy

This wonderful podcast combines tea, drama, and writing all in one. The host Emma Newman has an amazing ability to bring the story to life in the show. I only just discovered this little gem and I’m already hooked. Any show that can combine tea, a secret lair and an interview is sure to be brilliant. The best is saved for last in each episode.

Bonus Podcast

There is a wonderful podcast Self-Publishing Questions by Steve Scott. He did this podcast prior to Authority Self-Publishing. It has the best advice for an author bio in ‘SPQ 033: How to Write an Author Bio That Sells Books’.

If you have not already discovered podcasts there are some fantastic ones out there.
